Opening doors for the next generation - Larry Quinlan
I believe a fundamental part of leadership is helping others. Sure, people helped me and I have a responsibility to absolutely help others fulfill their aspirations and I view that as a moral obligation. I think there are a number of ways people like me can accomplish that: there’s the non-profit work that I do that’s important to me, but in addition to the institutional nonprofit work, I want to volunteer. I actually want to see real people being helped. Then there’s a responsibility one by one to open doors for others; to make introductions; to provide mentoring, sponsorship, counseling. Just a friendly air, a lunch; but to open my rolodex and say here are two people I think you could benefit from meeting and I will make an introduction for you, that will help you fulfill that dream of yours.
I think it’s really, really important to recognize that we cannot do it alone. Very often, talking specifically about us as minorities, we feel like we have to do it alone. We don’t want anybody to believe that we got any special favors, but everybody we’re competing against got help getting where they got to. It’s important that we all help each other and that we open doors for the next generation. It’s a fundamental responsibility of a world leader.

Larry Quinlan is a technology leader, retired global Chief Information Officer, public board director and strategic advisor to private equity. He serves on the Board of ServiceNow Inc as well as on private boards.
Larry retired in 2021 as the Global Chief Information Officer for Deloitte — one of the world’s largest professional services organizations, with over 330,000 people in more than 150 countries and territories. In addition to the CIO role, Larry led major client relationships and served as dean of the Next Generation CIO Academy, Deloitte’s CIO leadership development program for client executives.
Larry is passionate about the possibilities that technology has to make our lives better. He speaks frequently on the topics of leadership, IT transformation, mobility, collaboration, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. He has been honored by institutions and publications including STEMconnector’s 100 Diverse Corporate Leaders in STEM, the Nashville Business Journal (2014 CIO Award), American Foundation for the University of The West Indies (Vice Chancellor’s Award), CARAH (Outstanding Contribution to Corporate America), and CIO.com (2012 CIO 100 Award). In 2018, Larry was inducted by CIO.com into their CIO Hall of Fame.
He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from The University of the West Indies in 2018.
Larry is NACD Directorship Certified and also serves on nonprofit boards including the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI), KIPP Charter Schools Miami, Easterseals South Florida and NACD Florida. He is chair of the Information Technology Committee of the United Way of Miami-Dade.
