On May 16, 2024, MassChallenge convened a meeting of the NATO Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA), which marked a significant milestone in fostering groundbreaking dual-use technologies across the NATO alliance.

The program’s curriculum leaned on the MIT dual-use framework — a system for startups and ventures navigating the complexities of both the commercial and mission markets. Out of a competitive pool of over 1,300 applications, 44 promising startups were selected to participate, each bringing innovative solutions to the forefront. MassChallenge’s unwavering commitment to dual-use technology — capable of serving both commercial and governmental purposes — reflects a broad and impactful vision that resonates with NATO DIANA’s mission to modernize and innovate within various sectors including aerospace, biotechnology, defense, energy, healthcare, sustainability, and transportation.

Lisa Spadafora Thompson, a member of the “Negotiations in Dual-Use Markets” panel said, “It was an honor to serve on the panel and share my insights and expertise with the incredible entrepreneurs developing next-generation technologies to address the world’s most critical defense and security challenges. I applaud DIANA and MassChallenge for recognizing the importance of building a negotiation capability for the partners. Ensuring a broad and sustainable pipeline of new technologies requires the founders to be as effective at the negotiating table as they are in the lab developing products.”

The NATO DIANA Program, through the dynamic collaboration with MassChallenge, MIT, and Starburst, stands as a testament to our collective effort to challenge the status quo and drive sustainable change through innovation. The groundbreaking solutions developed within this program not only promise to enhance global defense capabilities but also pave the way for a more secure and resilient future.
